September Rangeley Maine Bear Hunt

System Overview

This System documents my setup for a guided September bear hunt in Rangeley, Maine, running September 16–19. We’re a group of four staying in an Airbnb and hunting with a guide who handles the hounds, bait sites, stands, local transportation during the hunt, and the recovery-side logistics. The expectation is that mornings will lean toward hunting with hounds and later parts of the day may shift to sitting over bait, although the exact daily rhythm will depend on the guide.

The biggest variable in this System is weather. I’m planning around cool September mornings, potentially wet ground, and enough movement that overheating is just as relevant as staying warm. The Crispi Guide GTX is my preferred boot, paired with KUIU gaiters, while the LaCrosse Alphaburly Pro 1600s come along as a backup if water or terrain makes a rubber boot the better choice. Clothing works the same way: I’m bringing several First Lite layer and pant options rather than committing to one fixed combination before seeing the forecast.

My field kit stays relatively compact. The Cabela’s Transporter 1200 is the most likely day pack, with the Eberlestock Team Elk available if I end up needing more capacity. Binos and the rangefinder ride in an Eberlestock Recon harness, while navigation and communication are handled by my phone with onX and a Garmin inReach Messenger Plus.

The rifle setup is simple and familiar: a Ruger American Predator in .308 with a Vortex SPARC Solar, Federal Terminal Ascent ammunition, a spare magazine, and roughly 40 rounds as trip inventory rather than field carry. A Primos shooting stick stays in the truck and may come out if we’re sitting over bait. The overall approach is to bring enough flexibility for hounds, bait, and changing weather without carrying every contingency into the woods every time.
