System Overview

This System covers a two-night solo camp in the Holeb Pond and Jackman region of western Maine over Columbus Day weekend. The setup is truck-supported rather than backpacking-based: the truck stays at camp as the storage, charging, recovery, and cold-storage hub after more than 10 miles of unpaved logging-road access. The point of the trip is to unplug, with deer scouting and opportunistic grouse hunting treated as optional additions rather than the reason every item is packed.

Shelter and sleep are built around a Marmot Tungsten one-person tent, a waterproof tarp, a Kelty Lowdown Cot, The North Face One Bag sleeping bag, and a NEMO Fillo pillow. The Sea to Summit Ether Light XT pad is a conditional comfort layer for the cot rather than an item that must be used every night. That same modular approach runs through the rest of camp: the NEMO Stargaze chair, KĀMA Mondo surface, Turtlebox speaker, Streamlight lantern, and Fenix headlamp make the base camp comfortable without turning the field load into a gear dump.

Cooking stays flexible for a short trip. The Jetboil handles fast water and simple meals, while the Fire-Maple cookware and Lodge cast iron cover meals worth cooking at camp. Food is brought from home, with Mountain House meals as backup; the plan never depends on harvesting game. Water and cold storage remain at the truck in a YETI Tundra 45, a drinking-water jug, and frozen gallon jugs that can also provide cooling capacity if meat needs to be handled.

If scouting or hunting happens, the carry changes with the day. The Eberlestock Team Elk pack, Recon bino harness, Vortex binoculars, offline onX maps, and Garmin inReach support movement away from camp. Boots, pants, insulation, and weather layers are alternatives selected for conditions, not simultaneous loads. The Ruger 10/22 and Benelli SuperNova are also conditional choices; this System does not imply both are carried at once.

Recovery gear, first aid, power, camera equipment, and basic hygiene stay organized around the truck so the camp can remain self-contained when cell service is weak or unavailable. Exact campsite, logging-road route, and scouting locations are intentionally withheld. The regional map is centered only on the public Holeb Pond area and is deliberately too broad to expose private field locations.

  • Truck-supported dispersed base camp for a two-night Columbus Day weekend.
  • Shelter, cooking, power, water, recovery, and cold storage remain staged at the truck.
  • Scouting and small-game hunting are optional; field loads change with conditions and activity.
  • Clothing, footwear, and firearm alternatives are conditional—not simultaneous carry.
  • Exact campsite, access route, and scouting locations are intentionally not disclosed.
