The Trail Back is a good example of trekking poles becoming useful for reasons that have nothing to do with shaving ounces or looking like a serious backpacker. On steep climbs, long descents, loose ground, and mountain hunts, another two points of contact can matter a lot more than the sophistication of the pole itself. The aluminum construction, simple FlickLock adjustment, and extended grips make these a practical workhorse; lighter carbon poles make more sense when minimum carried weight is the priority.
