The First Time Ditch Lights Actually Felt Different

These were the second set of ditch lights I owned. The first were inexpensive lights I barely remember, and when I bought my AT4X in 2023 I wanted something better. I installed the RIGID D-SS Pro Floods that summer, doing the entire auxiliary-light install myself for the first time. Getting through the AT4X firewall was the hardest part, but once everything was wired and I turned them on, the difference was obvious. Even in a reasonably well-lit parking lot, they were dramatically brighter and threw light much farther to the sides than what I had used before. At that stage, though, they were still mostly fun. I liked having more light and seeing more eyes reflecting from the tree line. I had not yet learned what that extra visibility was actually worth.

They Earned a Place on the Next Truck

The reason these lights stay is simple: I trust what they give me when visibility gets bad. Jackman turned them from an accessory into part of how I use the truck. On dark logging roads, the wider view gave me confidence around ditches, turns, gates, and places where a full-size truck does not leave much room for error. The fact that the cameras became more useful at the same time only made the system work better. They have also held up. I have had to tighten mounting bolts occasionally, but I have not had meaningful problems with the lights themselves since installing them in 2023. I am waiting for the 2027 truck before replacing the AT4X, and I already know these lights are coming off the old truck and going onto the new one. Gear does not get a much clearer vote of confidence than that.

In the Field

The trip that changed my opinion happened on logging roads around Jackman, Maine in November 2023. There were no streetlights for miles, the roads were narrow and uneven, hard ditches ran along both sides, and gates or closed access sometimes forced three-point turns with very little room. During new-moon darkness, the RIGIDs gave me a much wider view around the front of the truck and let me see the road edges and areas I was turning toward. The added light also improved the AT4X camera views, which made those tight maneuvers substantially easier.

The RIGIDs were noticeably brighter than the inexpensive ditch lights I had used previously, even during my first test in a decently lit parking lot.
