What Actually Holds Up on the Water
There’s a lot of fishing apparel out there that looks good on a hanger.
That matters less once you are on the water for a full day and conditions start to shift.
What you actually reach for over time is what tells the story.
For me, AFTCO has a handful of pieces that have earned a consistent spot in the rotation. Not everything they make is essential, but the gear that works tends to get used a lot.
This is what I keep coming back to.

The Pieces I Use the Most
If you are trying AFTCO for the first time, this is where I would start.
Reaper Windproof Pullover
This is one of those pieces that just gets grabbed without thinking.
Early spring mornings, late fall runs, cold air cutting across the water before the sun comes up. That is where this really stands out.
The built-in face guard helps a lot when you are running the boat and taking wind straight on. The windproof layer makes a noticeable difference compared to a standard hoodie.
If you deal with cold starts, this ends up being a go-to.
Original Fishing Shorts
On the other end of the spectrum, these get used just as much.
Hot days, long hours, moving around the boat, getting wet and drying off again. They handle all of it.
They are lightweight, dry fast, and fit well, especially if you need a little more room. The pockets are actually useful without getting in the way.
These are easy to keep in rotation both on and off the water.
What I Use Depending on Conditions
Reaper Sweatshirt
This is a lighter option compared to the windproof pullover.
Same general feel with the face guard, just better suited for cooler days when it is not overly harsh out. Spring and fall are where it fits best.
It gets used, just not as much as the windproof version.
Reaper Windproof Jacket
When the weather turns, this is the piece that steps in.
It is warm and blocks wind well, especially during early spring or pushing into colder conditions.
Fit is worth noting. It runs a bit snug, especially through the arms, so layering underneath can be limited.
If you fish in rougher weather, it has a place. Just something to be aware of.
Samurai Performance Sun Shirt
For summer, this is hard to beat.
Lightweight, breathable, and comfortable over long days in the sun. The sun protection alone makes it worth having when you are out all day.
Some versions include a built-in face shield that vents well and does not fog up your sunglasses, which is a nice bonus.
This is one of those pieces that ends up being part of your regular setup once it gets hot out.
Extras
Flip Flops
Comfortable and easy to wear before and after being on the water.
The SeaDek style cushioning holds up if you are on your feet for a while. Not something you necessarily need from AFTCO, but they are solid.
The newer collab with OluKai looks good and worth checking out.
The Bottom Line
AFTCO has a few pieces that stand out because they actually get used.
The Reaper Windproof Pullover and Original Fishing Shorts are the two I come back to the most. Everything else depends on conditions and how you fish.
If you start with what you will actually wear, it is easy to see where the rest fits in.
